THE HOUSE

Casa Grande do Campo das Hortas, also known as the Cunha Reis House, has been in the family for over 200 years. Although it is often visited by their members, the house has certain areas available on a conditional basis and through previous arrangements, for cultural and touristic purposes, thus allowing public access to those areas.

The building has an 18th century Baroque style façade, with a rich and harmonious granite stonework surrounding the large balconies that open onto the bordering square, constituting one of the most important works of civil architecture in the city of Braga, which is why it was classified as a building of public interest in 1976.

In the beginning of the 19th century, major works were carried out on the house, with the construction of the upper part of the façade where the pediment with the family coat of arms can be found, and, on the inside, a rich decoration of the entrance and other halls, where beautiful stucco works can be appreciated. The garden was completely remodelled on this occasion as well, creating the opening of the characteristic gravel streets for strolling, surrounded by beautiful trees which are now a hundred years old.

THE LIBRARY

The library of the house consists of about 2000 works, from which 1400 were printed before the year 1800. The aforementioned set was gathered through several generations of the family and it consists of an interesting collection of works from which several areas of knowledge can be found. They range from history, philosophy, theology, civil and canon law to natural sciences, amongst others.

Complementing the library, there is a large family archive with historical interest due to its gathered documentation from the end of the 18th and 19th century. It covers the time of the French Invasions and the Portuguese Civil War through the members of this family, who played important roles in the government of the Archbishopric of Braga and in the command of the Miguelista troops in the city of Braga.
